Leadership And Decisionmaking By Intuition

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

The greatest leaders, managers, commanders and other responsible decision makers generally lead by their "gut" -- a twitterword [this latter is a Lingovation] for intuition. But how does a responsible individual differentiate between emotions (which are negative factors in decision making in a business or battlefield context) and intuition? Knowing the difference is absolutely crucial.

EMOTION IN BUSINESS - THE DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD

EMOTION IN BUSINESS - THE DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD

This article contains references and hyperlinks to an article which was originally published in THE NATIONAL NETWORKER Newsletter (September, 2009, Week 1) by Featured Columnist Douglas Castle.

Dear Colleagues:

My brief +/- 140-character broadcast on Twitter read as follows:

"Passion fuels a business, but an emotional attachment to a bad decision can undo it all. Douglas Castle http://twitlik.com/Sunk  #TNNW " Please read the article, and give me your candid feedback.

The article is titled "Don't Keep Watering a Dead Tree," and it deals with a problem that I have seen in virtually every professional career and in every business. We have a very Human propensity to start a business out of passion (not unlike adolescent infatuation), and then to mess things up in increments, over time, by making bad decisions and continuing to support them. My favorite example was a software development company client which had spent well over its budget on a particular type of packaged program that was already becoming obsolete in the marketplace. Demand for the product, which was not quite complete, was diminishing daily as the market turned toward a different technology.

Despite this knowledge, the directors of the company, all very good technical programmers, were obsessed with "seeing the project through." [not unlike deciding to go to the beach after it has begun to drizzle because you'd already packed your cooler]

They not only failed to cut their losses, but they continued to overspend their budget and neglect their core business. They were in Chapter 11 six months later. This is extremely common. My questions for the Group are:

1.     How do we increase our own awareness of this tendency?
2.     How do we differentiate between a "loss" and an "opportunity-in-progress?"
3.     Is it helpful to create a rule (i.e., a budget) which absolutely limits time and money on any project, regardless of how "close" we feel that we are getting to victory?
4.     What are some of the excuses that we use to justify throwing good money after bad?
5.     Many people believe that most businesses fail because of inadequate capitalization. Is it possible that an even greater percentage fail because of reluctance to acknowledge mistakes and change course?

I would truly appreciate your insights as well as your review of the article.

Thank you.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

DESPERATION

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

I have often heard it said that "desperate times require desperate measures." People do things out of desperation (or out of a sense of desperation) which they often regret afterwards. It would be a blessing, in this life, to never react to circumstances, real or perceived, in a desperate way.

Too many of us are inveterate "reactives," and are no longer pro-active. This makes for a constant sensation of living in a maelstrom...of running and hiding, of being thrown from one crisis into the next...the horrible feeling of being helpless and losing ground.

A powerfully transformative exercise is to visualize that the worst has already happened, and to take on the attitude of serene (almost post-mortem!) detachment that comes to us in the aftershock before taking action. For most of us, this would be amazingly liberating.

In the movies, the fellow on the wrong end of the gun relishes those precious moments before the hammer of death strikes to confront and belittle his executioner. This type of "laughter in the face of death" is exhilarating. We should try our level best to live in that moment of clever parting words instead of crying and begging.

Desperation brings about crying and begging. A psychic reconciliation with the worst that could happen is intoxicating and empowering... and it beats the hell out of desperation any day. A reconciliation with the worst brings out the victorious, wise-cracking smartass in all of us.

You can not act out of desperation and be a hero. In fact, you cannot act out of desperation and feel any sense of power or control. Desperation is a waste of spirit, and waste of the opportunities which otherwise abound in life.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

RAPID-FIRE WISDOM: INTRODUCTION TO COMMAND THERAPY.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

Words delivered minimally, in staccato fashion, tend to 1) make a greater impact, and to 2) be perceived as wisdom. Rightly or wrongly, this is a typical human perception. Some examples of rapid-fire wisdom follow. Think about this: the few the words you use to express an important idea, the more weight each word carries:

1. Don't hesitate.
2. Stand down!
3. Am I clear?
4. Do this...
5. Move! Move! Move!

In Command Therapy (an obscure type of hypnotherapeutic training and conditioning), the short bursts of words are used to pierce the armor of the subconscious rather than lenghty, metaphorical seduction and distraction (i.e. an Ericksonian approach to hypnosis). Each approach works, but in a different way, and for different specific purposes. A mastery of both approaches makes you a very powerful and persuasive speaker, and easily assumed to be a leader when in a crowd of other individuals.

This is a discussion worth continuing. We will.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

JUDGMENT

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

No matter what action you take, and regardless of its appropriateness or necessity, someone will judge you wrong. People prefer to criticize than to create -- it is far easier, and easier to gain a following. The trick is to understand that your principal job, for emotional and spiritual survival, is to please yourself. You have to live with your decisions -- your critics and detractors do not. Show strength by not 1) yielding to their judgment, and by 2) being your own judge. Even your critics will be envious of you if you go forth with your plans and your life despite them.

Never allow yourself to be held hostage by another person's opinion.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

LEADERSHIP - SOME THOUGHTS

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

I wanted to share some of my thoughts on leadership with you, especially in a time when a very misguided, disillusioned world is crying out for true leaders, instead of campaigners, complainers and paralyzed party-line non-deciders who merely take up seats until they are replaced by other inconsequential lumps of poll-readers.

LEADERSHIP

True leadership requires great focus, occasional compromise, occasional confrontation, perpetual vigilance, and enough belief in the Mission (and those people whom need to be united and helped) that it presides over everything.

A leader educates, guides, and makes great demands of others. These demands are always reasonable because they are Mission-justified.

A leader understands that he/she must command, or suffer the consequences of being led astray by others. A leader works for his/her troops, but does not form alliances with third parties unless those third parties have more to offer him/her than he/she has to offer them. And he/she does not fear asking for the better side of a quid pro quo! Nor should we, as supporters of these leaders.

The only time a true leader takes "no" for an answer is when the Devil approaches him/her with a parchment and a quill pen, or when the Grim Reaper extends his bony hand.

If a leader has a position - he/she states it. Clearly;

If a leader requires assistance - he/she asks for it. - and asks, and asks, and asks, until enough people have heard the message enough times that they relent.

But a leader must believe in his or her Mission, and in his or her charges, in order to meet these challenges.

Be a leader -- differentiate yourself from the occupants of a world that is overripe and soft with passive observers and false prophets in search of petty profits at the expense of poor fools living in desperation.

BE A LEADER. WE NEED YOU. NOW.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle
