The Five Types Of Threatening Personalities - Identify and Prepare

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

THE FIVE TYPES OF THREATENING PERSONALITIES
Identify Them and Prepare Yourself

Written by Douglas Castle for Taking Command! at http://TakingCommand.blogspot.com

Ironic Note: You come into contact with all five types almost daily.

Observation: These types of personalities are ultimately either institutionalized, or become powerful role-models, cult-leaders or business magnates. Extremes.

Examples: BOLO ("Be On The LookOut") ALERT - spend a day commingling with a nice, mixed group of people, and you will see each of these types represented -- I'll let you sort out which is which.

Vigilance: Each of us has harbors each of these propensities to some extent. We control them, we contain them, but sometimes a major life event pushes these demons into positions of dangerous control within us.

Dear Readers:

The people whom we are inclined to fear, and who, sadly come to dominate our lives and the world in which we live are categorized below. Learn to recognize them, to either avoid or counterstrike them, and to navigate a world filled with a far greater percentage of them in the Human population than we would care to believe. But then, Taking Command assumes and requires that we recognize reality, accept it, findways to contend with it, and, to the extent which we are able, to change that reality to conform to our standards.

The cast of characters:

1. The violent psychotic, filled with paranoic delusions, feeling persecuted and injured, and perceiving constant threats. If he is outspoken and articulate, he may become a cult leader or a folk legend. If he cannot interact at all with others, he will commit acts of violence (homicidal and suicidal), and be incarcerated or otherwise institutionalized if his family lacks sufficient resources to keep him clear of the System's web;

2. The sociopath who can be charming as needed but will do whatever he requires in order to manipulate people and circumstances to his advantage. He is unencumbered by a conscience, is an imaginative and convincing liar, and he can always justify, within himself, the damages he causes to others. He is driven by selfishness;

3. The scheming plotters and planners who are quite visibly malevolent, but who are obsessed with their own success and gain, almost as they are obsessed with hurting others in the process. They do not use guile and charm. They are often obvious about their motives (no matter how savage or socially unacceptable), and they will do whatever it takes to achieve them. They do not care about convincing others -- they are insularly self-righteous, and driven by a combination of needing to dominate and needing to inflict pain -- to sacrifice others in the interest of personal gain is the optimal amalgam of both motivations;

4. The abusive, opportunistic energy vampire. These are people who will impose upon you (often using flattery, deceitfulness, pity) to do things for them. Their principle objective is transfer their burdensome responsibilities onto you, and to pay you in the most valueless currency possible in return. There is no meaningful exchange or reciprocity offered. These people also like to get free samples, terminate relationships when they become obligated to begin making payment, fail to repay debts, complain endlessly about how they "counted on you but you disappointed them," bend your ear with their tales of hardship and woe, and become notably scarce when their help or efforts are required.

5. The socially-disconnected psychopath who does not even comprehend the notion of consequences resulting from his actions, takes brazen risks (often due to an unreasonable lack of fear, combined with compulsiveness to address his immediate needs), and has a depraved indifference to the suffering of others. He is completely indifferent. There is no bargaining with him. He does not have any awareness, much less a conscience, regarding life or property. He lives in the compulsive present, with no connection to the future, or to other living creatures. For this individual, there is no wrong or right -- there is only hunger, and a need to quickly satisfy it.
---------------

Learn to recognize these potentialities in others, and learn to see them in yourself, as well.

Conclusion: Know who you really are (understand yourself with as much critical objectivity as is humanly possible), see others for whom they really are, are use this knowledge to optimize your personal productivity as well as your interactions with 0thers.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

Bi-Polar Politics - Douglas Castle, Co-Chairman Of TNNWC Group, LLC

Bi-Polar Politics - Douglas Castle, Co-Chairman Of TNNWC Group, LLC

Dear Friends, Colleagues and Incessant Detractors:

It's a perfectly predictable Human behavioral phenomenon, which stems from a need to blame a third party (to abdicate responsibility); a natural fear-mongering "mob mentality,"; a quest for simplification of the thought process by generalizing and stereotyping; and the natural propensity to exaggerate to make a point.

To be a republican almost requires that you denounce anything which the democrats are doing, while you embrace (part and parcel) whatever is put up on the republican table.

To be a democrat almost requires that you denounce everything which the republicans are doing or have done in previous administrations, and that you accept whatever is put up on the democratic table.

This leads to radicalism and an unhealthy "groupthink" on the part of both parties. After a while, the role of either party simple becomes to upseat, defame and encumber the actions of the other party. It turns very negative, and problem-solving and bridge-building are replaced by finger-pointing and wild leaps of paranoic logic. It's not bi-partisan. It's more bipolar, with a deep twist of paranoid schizophrenia on each side. respectively.

Lies lead to bigger lies. The unproven rumor becomes grassroots gospel. Distortions and contortions abound. Now Hear This! -- The "average democrat" is a leftist, radical progressive, while the "average republican" is a xenophobic, flag-waving demagogue, hawkishly obsessed with matters of terrorism and national security. The polarization grows to the extent that there is no room on either party's agenda for having its members serve the citizenry of the United States.

Citizens have become spectators. We have largely stopped thinking and accepted party platforms as package deals without individual picking and choosing of what's good or bad about either. It's all or none. It's black or white.

Bi-Polar politics, and the politicians and pundits who play and promote them, are inherently devisive, destructive and are a simpleton's circus of simplification. They are an omnipresent, loud diversion from the business of team-building and problem-solving that is incumbent upon any organization (a company or a Nation-State) wishing to survive in hard times.

It is not unlike the staff and crew of the ill-fated Titanic pointing at eachother to determine "whose fault it is" while the ship sinks rapidly into the icy water, with far too few lifeboats to rescue all of the passengers -- whoever designed the vessel was either very negligent or very, very self-confident.

A real commander has to transcend politics and a "shame and blame" behavioral default setting in order to unite the troops and make progress in solving problems and moving onward.

What have we here in the United States? Two parties fighting. A public (and a republic) losing hope, faith and initiative. And not a single leader to fill the void that is sucking the life out of a once-great nation.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

Make Yourself Understood

MAKE YOURSELF UNDERSTOOD.

"It is important that you word your questions with great precision and without presumption." - Douglas Castle   http://aboutDouglasCastle.blogspot.com
---------------

Dear Friends:

Comedian Steven Wright tells a story about walking around his neighborhood wearing socks of two different colors. When a woman asks him, "Do you know that your socks don't match?" he replies, "Sure they do. I don't go by color-- I go by thickness."

Last evening, my wife asked me, "What's the difference between loquacious and garrulous?" I quickly replied, "The spelling."

Of course she had intended to ask, "What is the difference in meaning between loquacious and garrulous?"

The lesson is a simple but important one: The quality and usefulness that you will get in response to a question will be influenced by the way in which you word the question. Imprecisely worded questions lead to misinterpretations, and misinterpretations lead to inefficient and unproductive conversation.

Worded slightly differently: If you ask questions with a high degree of specificity, you greatly increase the probability of your getting answers that are meaningful. You may discuss the implications of this this with any attorney who has gone through the exercise of examining a person on the witness stand.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

The Job Nobody Wants

The Job Nobody Wants

Situations Force some of us to Lead, and the Rest of us to Either Hide or Complain.

Dear B:

Thank you so much for your concern and support.

I know that you understand.

Sometimes difficult situations are foist upon us because actions must be taken or problems must be solved ... and no other volunteer steps forward to meet the challenge. Our reactions define us.

I did not ask for leadership -- it was imposed upon me as a condition precedent to achieving something good, lasting and greater than myself. My motivation is not selfish, or ego-driven. It is a hunger for accomplishment. It is born of a compassion for the suffering of Humankind that I would want to make things better.

More than any of  this, it is a desperate need for redemption that cries out through me.

Always,

Douglas Castle

Self-Growth: The Reality.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Self-Growth: The Reality.

The Most Efficient Path to Self-Growth, by Douglas Castle, Vice-Chairman of The National Networker Companies.

*Commentary regarding a sales letter (not reproduced here) from David Riklan of SelfGrowth.com: "How 97.5 % of all Self Improvement Companies Grow their Businesses"

David Riklan publishes and produces the selfgrowth.com website and its ancillary businesses. He accepts articles written by many writers about various aspects of "self-growth." Some of these articles are very worthwhile reading, and an intelligent person can occasionally acquire a gold nugget of an idea by reading the material produced by his authors. His business grows itself by his authors' contributions of article content and fees. I admire his business model - it is a good one. But there are some serious negatives...

David Riklan is a pay-to-play proclaimer of "expert" status, and a purveyor of "experts" in the self-improvement field. He (through selfgrowth.com) hasn't achieved any great credibility (in my uniquely myopic and snobbish view) as yet and doesn't develop traction for his readers. He actually tried to get me to enlist (i.e. "pay") as an "expert," and eventually wanted to discuss my going to work for him. I declined, saying that I was intellectually incapable of holding my own in a room filled with so many other "experts." I humbly confessed that I, myself, needed a great deal of self-improvement before I could counsel others in all good conscience.

Almost every person with whom I come into contact (I usually wear gloves) is a "self-growth expert" or a "self-growth coach." I always ask myself (silently, of course, so as not to create a stir) several questions before I entertain engaging a coach or advisor:

1). Does he or she "walk the walk?" [is he or she the avatar of a self-improved creature?]
2). Would I want to emulate this person? Is her or she someone I admire?
3). Has he or she successfully coached others and generated appreciable results?
4). Can we work comfortably together?
5). Would he or she be audacious enough to refuse me as a client if I were perfectly willing to pay, but obviously demonstrated serious deficiences or limitations (in terms of ability or attitude)?

I have found that many people actually need more of a strategic path and plan than they do generic "self-improvement" tips. That is why I've chosen to be involved in strategic planning and organizational engineering instead of stand alone self-growth.

On the path to achieving a business or professional goal, an individual doubtless encounters numerous real-time, real-world difficulties which force him or her to make adaptations which are, by definition, "self-growth."

The best path to self-growth is through field testing and experience.

In brief (I frequently write while in my underwear), don't talk to me about camping --- take me on a rugged camping trip. Experience is the most potent teacher of all, and the multisensorial memories created through experience are much more readily memorable, accessible and credible than those learned in a casual or classroom environment.

We learn most effectively by observing, and then by doing.

Faithfully,

DouglasCastle

Drawing The Line - Don't Let Your Competence and Generosity Make You a Target For Abuse.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Drawing The Line.

If you should have the misfortune of being competent and word of your ability gets out...if you should be generous, and word of your generosity escapes...you will invariably find yourself at the very bottom of a heavy and malodorous pile of compost comprised other people's problems, burdens, errands and favors. You might feel guilty. You may feel overwhelmed.

Eventually this can lead to a growing malignancy of resentment and anger. Don't explode! Unload.

The problem is caused by limitless acceptance of responsibility, and the fault is in your failure to communicate your limitations to those who have become overly-dependent upon you. You may have even helped to inculcate a feeling of entitlement in these people. This pattern helps neither your, nor those who depend upon you. All parties are weakened by it.

Draw the line, and learn to guard it. Your sanity might be of benefit to everybody.

Here's an example of a proclamation, wherein a line is drawn:

Dear Family, Friends, Colleagues and Hard-Won Clients:

I have drawn a line, and you are treading close to it. I am nobody's clerk. I am nobody's errand boy. I am nobody's servant. I have no further interest in yielding to anybody else's priorities, agendas or problems. Mine must come first. I will accommodate you when, as and if I have adequate time and resources.

Life is filled with deadlines, responsibilities and emergencies. They cannot all be mine.

I am asking you to be more self-sufficient and enterprising, and to be as respectful of my needs as I am of yours. Thank you.

Respectfully, and finally,

Douglas

p.s. Perhaps the problem can be solved by more self-reliance, more staffing for assistance and delegation, and by letting me do the things that are most important to my life and my mission, for our collective benefit.

The Darker Side of Population Control

DOES THE HUMAN RACE HAVE A DEEPLY-PROGRAMMED SOCIAL DESTRUCTION SWITCH?

-by Douglas Castle,  Featured Author for THE NATIONAL NETWORKER Newsletter: http://www.TheNationalNetworker.com,  http://www.LinkedIn.com/in/douglascastle , http://aboutDouglasCastle.blogspot.com

We Humans kill each other. Cain and Abel. David and Goliath. Hamilton and Burr. Currier and Ives (kidding). We have done it since the beginning of time and we do it today. Whether it is a convenience store robbery gone wrong, an incident on the field of combat, an electrocution or lethal injection, a spate of ethnic cleansing...we can't seem to stop. Nagasaki. Hiroshima. Auschwitz. Jonestown.

Words fail us but weapons don't. Something is not working properly. Enough murder leads to extinction, and we Human Beings are in danger of extinction. We don't need to be hit by a meteor shower.

If some priest, shaman or other bearer of gifts or keeper of secrets doesn't share his knowledge with us, we eventually kill him for "holding out on us." Ironically, if some humanitarian, scientist, philosopher or holy man is compelled by his generous spirit to share his visions or knowledge with us, we will crucify him, burn him at the stake, or ostracize him until his life becomes so unbearable that he willingly surrenders it up to stop the pain.

We do far more killing than creating. Perhaps that's because killing, like destroying, is so much easier. if indeed there is a murderous gene, it is not only dominant, but it is becoming increasingly prevalent as killers tend to breed more than creators. This makes sense, as the percentage of killers grows far more rapidly than the percentage of creators -- and killers have a longer lifespan.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

EMOTION IN BUSINESS - THE DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD

EMOTION IN BUSINESS - THE DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD

This article contains references and hyperlinks to an article which was originally published in THE NATIONAL NETWORKER Newsletter (September, 2009, Week 1) by Featured Columnist Douglas Castle.

Dear Colleagues:

My brief +/- 140-character broadcast on Twitter read as follows:

"Passion fuels a business, but an emotional attachment to a bad decision can undo it all. Douglas Castle http://twitlik.com/Sunk  #TNNW " Please read the article, and give me your candid feedback.

The article is titled "Don't Keep Watering a Dead Tree," and it deals with a problem that I have seen in virtually every professional career and in every business. We have a very Human propensity to start a business out of passion (not unlike adolescent infatuation), and then to mess things up in increments, over time, by making bad decisions and continuing to support them. My favorite example was a software development company client which had spent well over its budget on a particular type of packaged program that was already becoming obsolete in the marketplace. Demand for the product, which was not quite complete, was diminishing daily as the market turned toward a different technology.

Despite this knowledge, the directors of the company, all very good technical programmers, were obsessed with "seeing the project through." [not unlike deciding to go to the beach after it has begun to drizzle because you'd already packed your cooler]

They not only failed to cut their losses, but they continued to overspend their budget and neglect their core business. They were in Chapter 11 six months later. This is extremely common. My questions for the Group are:

1.     How do we increase our own awareness of this tendency?
2.     How do we differentiate between a "loss" and an "opportunity-in-progress?"
3.     Is it helpful to create a rule (i.e., a budget) which absolutely limits time and money on any project, regardless of how "close" we feel that we are getting to victory?
4.     What are some of the excuses that we use to justify throwing good money after bad?
5.     Many people believe that most businesses fail because of inadequate capitalization. Is it possible that an even greater percentage fail because of reluctance to acknowledge mistakes and change course?

I would truly appreciate your insights as well as your review of the article.

Thank you.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle
