Greetings, my friend, and I hope this letter finds you well.
Let me start by saying that I generally support Avaaz, the organization that published the newsletter attached hereto.
The writer of the forwarded piece makes me want to cry to the heavens. He is wandering about in a delusional fugue state of impracticality and unreality, and is dangerously misguided. The real-world is not a Humanitarian utopia where goodness triumphs at the end of every tale. In this world, we must be prepared to fight for what is ours and for what we believe in. Without a vigilant, militant presence in Israel, Jews throughout the world would be wiped from the face of the Earth. Hatred, born of lies, of ignorance and envy, seethes very close to the surface of the skin of many non-Jews.
You have not made me into a believer, Barry. I don't ascribe to much of what Judaism is about, nor do I find any particular comfort in the faith or culture...but I have a bit of Jewish blood (I am a mutt) in my veins, and my heart beats for Zion. As promised. As earned. As a sovereign state and a monument to the most prolific group of people in the history of all Humankind it stands despite Man’s inherently destructive nature. As a shining light in a world filled with effete, "politically correct" prostitutes who would sell their freedoms for the protection of any bully.
People resent Israel because they envy her directness, her courage, her non-conformity in a robotic world, her unwillingness to bow to meaningless public opinion. The Catholic Church has helped perpetrate and promulgate the myth of Jews as "Christ Killers." What has the papacy done to make the desert of human culture bloom? -- it enslaves its foolish followers in a life of fear, ignorance and poverty. It hates resistance. It blanches at intelligence and free thought. The present Pope is working to repair some of this damage, but I fear his gestures are too little and far too late.
The UN has become a bully pulpit for failing and unsuccessful cultures. It is a sanctuary for the deservedly powerless to exercise their mouths... a haven for hypocrites. Sadly, as an Internationalist, I believe that the UN should be something far greater than what is has become.
If those hideous Hamas miscreants want to fire their rockets...if they want to hide their artillery pieces and munitions behind their own women and children, they deserve their casualties. They have no dignity. They have no shame. They use the innocent as shields -- their own women and children!
You cannot negotiate with terrorists. Appeasement is the policy of cowards. Some years ago, it merely served to whet Adolf Hitler's appetite.
The Israelis are not fanatics. They are pragmatists and survivors. And they consistently renew my sense of amazement at what a determined people are capable of accomplishing.
The Lion of Zion has a right to roar.
