Commanders, Visionaries and Entrepreneurs.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Commanders either set goals or are given tasks which they accomplish through their mastery of other Human Beings -- they understand that the Laws of Physics and Human (mortal) Physiology are the only unbreakable rules, and thus Commanders function within very broad operating parameters.

They are expert at behavioral psychology, social engineering, project management and acting. "Acting" both in the sense of playing a role in a play, and in the sense of taking action to proceed toward the accomplishment of a mission.

Visionaries are persons of inspiration, insight and epiphany who have an idea (usually a powerful mental picture of an outcome or objective), which they are compelled to promulgage. They NEED to reveal the nature of what they see (and often, what they have seen) to someone else.

Entrepreneurs, in the truest sense, encompass many of the aspects of both Commanders and Visionaries.

Successful Entrepreneurs must be talent scouts -- they have to identify and choose Visionaries, Commanders, and numerous technologists, professionals and soldiers (or employees) in order to build a self-sustaining system (i.e., a business or an organization of some sort) that will not only achieve goals, but which will become self-sustaining, and synergistic - a "production machine" which is far greater than the sum of its individual parts.

Entrepreneurs are the catalysts in society who bring the appropriate assets together in order to construct something.

Entrepreneurs are the principal creators of value in our society.

Visionaries - Thought-Leaders, Innovators, Entrepreneurs - Pros And Cons

Being a Visionary is a difficult calling. Firstly, you don't always know exactly who was "calling you" in the first place...perhaps your own conscience or subconscious....perhaps the Universal Consciousness...perhaps an angel of God...perhaps some form of hallucination in a brief fit of psychosis. All that you can know is that you've experienced an epiphany (or a revelation) which came to you from someone or somewhere, and that you feel compelled to act on it.
This action might take the form of shouting, writing, building, destroying, a combination of destroying and then rebuilding (remember the movie, "Field Of Dreams?"), plotting, running away, creating a work of art, or starting a business... it varies from visionary to visionary. I've been told that the building of an ark (at one point in history, as it is represented in the Old Testament) was a rather poor business decision from a return-on-investment (ROI) perspective for the builder, but that the virtue of having constructed it and helping the passengers (a true study in interspecies diversity) was its "own reward."
Being a Visionary is a lonely affair. People (the non-visionary populace, the crowd, the court of public opinion....however you choose to reference it) is sometimes taken aback by the nature of your revalation and they try to discourage you from acting on it or speaking about it. Sometimes they shutter you up in a dungeon, or make you drink a hemlock cocktail, or just have some evil covert operations pros make it look like you've had a "tragic accident." It all depends upon whom your vision may threaten.
On the other hand, people might hear your words and be so moved, and so powerfully influenced that they will come to worship you as a prophet. Of course, some people would prefer to sacrifice you at the stake, or on a cross, because people occasionally do that type of thing when a) they feel their power in jeopardy; b) they don't like what they are hearing, because it is too painfully true; or c) they believe it would be a good idea to offer you up as a sacrifice to the gods.
Usually what happens is that you go through a process:
1. You have a vision;
2. Your pinch yourself or take a wash your face with cold water;
3. You confide in someone;
4. Your confidante spreads the word (via parchment, telephone calls, a newspaper article or social media buzz), and others hear;
5. A few people are inspired and begin talking you up;
6. The "word" gets to some of the people who are invested in something which is threatened by your vision;
7. You are sacrificed;
8. Some years later, you are virtually deified as having been a "brilliant thinker," ahead of your time. In fact, you are respected and worship.
The sad part of this process if that step 7 occurs before step 8, which means your victory is awarded you posthumously.
Having heard all of this, are you certain that you still want to be a Visionary? If not, everyone will understand. If you still want to proceed on the path that you are called to follow (despite the above 8-step process), the world desperately needs you. And there is a remote chance (very improbably) that you will survive the experience and revel in its rewards before you are either in a straightjacket, wearing depends, or in an urn over someone's fireplace.

Your Passion Is Your Power To Achieve And To Lead - Re-Taking Command Of Yourself And Your Life

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Entrepreneurs, Future Leaders, Athletes and Celebrities: Your Passion Is Your Power.

As a child, you had a perception of limitless possibilities and opportunities for yourself. You had not experienced a great deal of failure, or disillusionment -- if you being brought up in a decent place, your self-esteem was fair to good. And your instincts, and intuition attracted you to certain pursuits, ideas, hobbies, or objectives.

These later became increasingly limited as your own highly-parametized self-limited beliefs (amped up by other people's constantly telling you how your chances at success were "one in a million," or that you should start thinking "practically" and "realistically" about your future. Since most people are failures, even by their own internal standards, your principal influences stopped becoming those passions and drives from deep within and started become a cacaphony of negative voices.

If you are like most people you compromised, grew resentful, downgraded your plans, and learned to adjust (i.e., to stifle or suppress) that longing for the passionate feelings and love for things you had as a child. As a child, your passion was your power. And as an adult, nothing has changed -- your passion is your power.

If you deny your passion, you deny your own identity. You never get to play the role that you really wanted so desperately and longingly to play. It is not too late. Sit down with yourself. Listen to your own inner voice. Be honest about the gap between what you'd really love to be doing and for that which you have settled.

Don't consider anybody else's embedded voice or repeated assessment of you. Identify yourself with the things that excite and delight you. Odds are that those things that once drove you, that kept you daydreaming, that got you out of bed early, that fed your fantasies are still at the core of you. If you know what you feel passionately about, you are close to knowing who you are and what you were meant to do.

Do whatever you must to get back to that childhood mission. Everything of brialliance and beauty in this world was born of unbridled, uncompromised passion. Plan to make a change, as aggressively (yet as methodically) as possible in order to get back on the direct highway to the pursuit of your passion. Your life will begin to "feel better" on you.

You will find yourself interested in what you are doing, or what you would rather be doing. You will incite the rebel within yourself. And, if you are relentless, and have truly decided that you want the power that is your birthright in this world, realign your actions and your pursuits with those passions. Tell all of the naysayers and pragmatists and realist and other terms which I use use as euphemisms for "child killers" that their opinions are their own, and are not solicited by you. Understand that you are the only one to judge what is right and what is wrong for yourself. Listen to your passion, and let it drive you once again.

You might re-locate, change careers, suffer a bit of trauma, take a few body blows, but you will be in YOUR arena. And the role that you will play on the stage of life will be as yourself. The more you yield to, and build around your passion as a creative, energetic nucleus, the more grounded and powerful you'll be. You can lead better if you have passion. You can feel better about yourself if you have passion. You can increase your energy level and operating efficiency if you have passion.

Your passion is the power that will give you command of yourself. And once in command of yourself, you will far better suited to command others. A person with a powerful vision is a social magnet.

---------------

As an aside, I had wanted to be a musician and performer when I was much younger. When I played my rock and pop and blues, it was as if unseen forces were guiding my hands. I loved every second of it. I was absorbed in it. I was constantly getting better at it.

As one of my bandmates once said of our group (funk and soul stuff) and of me: "Man when we play, we go HARD. And when you in your space, you play, you sing....Man..... like ain't nobody's business!"

Passion is a pathway to power and to command.

Don't neglect your passion or you'll be like the rest of the zombies you see at a commuter train station every morning. Stop living a life of quiet desperation -be who you really are. You'll find strength that you didn't even think that you had ever had.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

Action Distinguishes Leaders from Followers

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

You must take action as soon as you know what needs doing.

There is always a point where excessive contemplation, consensus and growing inertia -- and that point is almost immediately after a brilliant idea is put into words.

Unless these words are put immediately into action, momentum is lost, and progress is actually reversed.

Here is something that I culled from a letter to me from Mark Joyner, the Founder of Simpleology (http://www.simpleology.com/):

Her name was Florence Nightingale, noted as the single most important pioneer of Nursing. She was born to a family of great privlege, but chose to spend her days tending to those wounded in battle. This quote bears repeating: "I think one's feelings waste themselves in words; they ought all to be distilled into actions which bring results."

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

p.s. "Action" is the very thing which differentiates entrepreneurs from dreamers, and leaders from followers. Think about it.

Your Brain Is A Powerful Muscle - Keep It Fit and It Will Keep YOU Fit.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

To lead, to strategize, to solve problems, to execute a plan....these all require the use of a sharp, agile, awakened mind. And as with any other muscle, your mind can grow apathetic and atrophied with too little use. Your brain is your must crucial muscle, and yet it only consumes, on average, 20% of your daily caloric intake. And as you exercise your brain, it begins to develop its own "supplemental" exercises to strengthen and further empower itself. Every battle is fought in the mind. Every problem is solved in the mind. Think before you act. The more powerfully associative your brain is, the more quickly and efficiently you can think, and take the best available action.  // DC

Thinking burns calories, and more than you'd expect. [From Douglas Castle's noted BRAINTENANCE Blog]

Yes, It's true. The human brain, conducting its routine functions (some of which are conscious and voluntary and some of which are unconscious and involuntary) tends to consume an average of 20% of your daily caloric intake, provided that you are not grossly overweight, or that you have not gorged yourself with funnel cakes and corn dogs during the course of the day. Using your brain, and hence your mind, is most definitely an exercise requiring some level of physical exertion.

This means that if you were to consume 2,400 Calories per average day, your brain (as if it were the same as any other muscle at work) would consume approximately 480 Calories.

Several experts opine on this subject at ShareCare.Com, including such notables as Mehmet Oz, Kristy Lee Wilson, Todd Townes, Mike Clark and Wendy Batts, at http://www.sharecare.com/question/brain-calories-at-rest. The article is fascinating.

This, of course, begs the question: "Does the brain burn calories at a higher rate during certain mental activities?" Some possible theories and answers (more opinion and anecdotal than scientifically studied and verified) are summarized in a summary of study results which can be found at http://www.physicsforums.com/archive/index.php/t-42053.html. They seem a bit confusing at first, but I'll follow this summary with my own, logic-based conclusions:
[Does more activity (thinking more than normal) cause an increased need for calories?According to Arthur Jensen, yes (and no researcher seems to disagree with that, judging by the contents of the abstracts returned by a combined search for the keywords glucose, brain and energy on PubMed (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/entrez/query.fcgi?CMD=search&DB=pubmed&term=glucose+brain+energy)). Magnetic resonance studies involving glucose doped with radioisotopic tracers show more glucose use when the brain is active and show more glucose use in areas of the brain involved inspecific activities. This has allowed researchers to see which areas of the brain are activated during given specific types of cognitive activity. For example, a test subject may be asked to perform a certain cognitive task or even take an IQ test while his brain is being scanned. The areas of his brain that are activated during performance of the task are then visible to the researchers.
Another study [27] investigated glucose metabolic rate (GMR) as a function of the "mental effort" expended on a task. The investigators did not correlate GMR with the same test for each individual, but compared groups of average and high-IQ subjects (mean IQ of 104 vs. 123) on easy tasks and on difficult tasks that were equated for the same degree of either "easiness" or "difficulty" within each group. Regardless of the task's objective demands, tasks for which 90% of the responses were correct (within the average group, or within the high-IQ group) were defined as "easy" for each group, and tasks for which only 75% of the responses were correct (within each group) were defined as "difficult." In other words, the level of a task's subjective difficulty was calibrated relative to each group's ability. For example, the average-IQ group could recall 6 digits backwards on 75% of the trials, whereas the high-IQ group could recall 7 digits on 75% of the trials. The measurements of GMR during these tasks revealed a significant interaction between IQ level and "mental effort" (i.e., level of difficulty relative to the individual's general ability level). Average- and high-IQ subjects hardly differed in GMR on the "easy" items but differed markedly on the "difficult" items. The high-IQ subjects brought more "fuel" to bear on the more difficult task. This increase in GMR by the high-IQ subjects suggests that more neural units are involved in their level of performance on a difficult task that is beyond the ability of the average-IQ subjects.
27. Larson et al., 1995. Larson G. E., Haier R. J., LaCasse L. & Hazen K. (1995). Evaluation of a "mental effort" hypothesis for correlations between cortical metabolism and intelligence. Intelligence (http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/journal/01602896), 21, 267-278. (Arthur Jensen. The g Factor (http://www.questia.com/PM.qst?a=o&d=24373874). pp 158-159, 168, 616-616.)]

My logically-rationalized intuitive feeling about this "additional caloric burn" is that any of the following activities (I've called them "exercises" for purposes of conformity and simplicity) will cause increased glucose (Calories in suger) consumption in the brain. I shall not even hazard a guess at the extent of the "extra caloric burn."

EXERCISES: assimilating new information; making a ssociations and generalizations; making adaptations through neuroplasticity for injuries or deficiencies in other functional areas; puzzle-solving; map reading; abstract reasoning; tasks requiring multiple mental skill sets operating in full integration; neurolinguisitic reprogramming of previous beliefs and paradigms; memory and recall exercises; tasks requiring recall and multisensorial visualization; organizing and prioritizing tasks; creating processes and procedures to solve problems; processing feedback and reacting to the same in an unfamiliar environment; being forced to use less-popular or "dormant" mental faculties; explorations using the acknowledged senses; being forced to make emotionally or spiritually difficult choices with intense time limitations; and, in general, using the creative and imaginative processes. I also suspect that if you do a great deal of deep thinking about a particular news item, idea or concept while exercising physically, this increases the rate of entire body caloric burn, and possible makes that portion dedicated to cerebration slightly higher than the traditional 20%. Note: Maintain and train your brain, as well as your body - your physical and psychological health, as well as your level of cognitive growth, are all interrelated.

Faithfully,

The Road To Leadership and Command

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends, Colleagues, TNNWC Members, Bloggers, Entrepreneurs, Team-Leaders, Visionaries and Musicians With Their Songs Unsung: "Fear is the pervasive fog that we must somehow walk through in order to see the clear, untarnished image in the mirror which shows us our gifts, our beauty, our opportunities and our best selves." - Douglas Castle I am curious as to whether this greatness is within us at the start of our walk, or if the walk, of itself, makes us into the greatness that looks back upon us at the end of the dimensionless, all-enshrouding fog of fear. My suspicion is that most of us see the fog rolling in and retreat, or we advance slightly, only to get lost wihin its indiscernible depths and remain there, prisoners in our own recognizance.
