Genius And Leadership: James Joyce

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Leadership and command require skills taken from a variety of disciplines, including acting, advocacy, imagination, creativity, spontaneity, applied psychology and a knowledge of basic science. Following is a brilliant quote from poet and author James Joyce regarding the essence of genius as I believe that it applies directly to leadership -- and demonstrating how important perspective and perception are in explaining things to your charges or audience when you are cast in the role of being a Leader:

"A man of genius makes no mistakes. His errors are volitional and are the portals of discovery." James Joyce

Some quick observations:

1) Explanations can be every bit as important as actions;

2) How you conduct yourself after the act of doing anything (whether charity or murder) will be observed and interpreted in judging you in relation to the act itself;

3) Trial and error are permissible in a leader, within limits -- but they must be explained as attempts, experiments, monitoring or tests, and never as a lack or loss of direction.

As an aside, it is best to remember that as a leader, you are always being watched, always being judged, and always expected to have an answer which you can serve up without a moment's hesitation. Difficult? No. Impossible! But the "magic" of great leadership is to do, or to appear to do, what no one else could ever do.

Direct and Collateral Damage: The Tragic Aspects of Self-Defense

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

Following is an open letter to Mr. Stu Sinfa, posted on Facebook just moments ago. Mr. Sinfa asked if it was possible that the State of Israel had been "provoked" to act in a certain way regarding a certain situation. Israel's actions were condemned by some of the British media as being "inappropriate," "needlessly violent," or "uncivilized."
I am not a violent individual, but I believe that if someone points a gun at my head, he or she must be prepared to accept the high likelihood that 1) I will assume that the weapon is loaded; 2) I will assume that the individual aiming at my head intends (at his or her will) to pull the trigger; and that 3) I will take whatever action I am able to take to counter the perceived threat. In sum, I believe that if you choose to threaten my life, you must be fully willing to put your own at peril. You take on an immeasurable risk (and put those close to you at immeasurable potential risk) the moment that you decide to threaten me. There are no exceptions, unless it is my choice to permit you to deliver me from the burdens of this world.

Open Response To Stu Sinfa-

Regarding the issue of Israel's being "provoked" to act, I believe that Israel has been compelled to fight for its survival from the very moment of its first breath as a sovereign state. It is a tiny nation surrounded by violent adversaries relentlessly bent upon its annihilation. Self-defense (like politics) is an imprecise art, often inflicting casualties. -- DC

It is actually very simple, once you strip away the conflicts of interest, posturing, pandering, politics and old-fashioned bigotry.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

MISDIRECTION AND DISTRACTION - Reprinted from the IEP Yahoo! Group (click this title to join)

Dear Friends:

INTERNAL ENERGY PLUS requires an understanding of the vagaries (quirks) of the Human mind. The trick is to recognize them in ourselves, and to positively exploit them in getting others to do what we require of them.

Two of my favorites are misdirection and distraction. Law enforcement officials use them, as do military, negotiators, clever criminals and even precocious children.

Go to HUMANITAS MAXIMUS at
http://HumanitasMaximus.blogspot.com, and read today's post for one of the best illustrative examples I've heard in ages.

Faithfully, and in Thanksgiving,

Douglas Castle

PERCEPTION.

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Readers:

INTERNAL ENERGY PLUS has a curious area of intersection with NLP (neuro-linguistic programming); it has to do with the limitations imposed upon us by our perceptions. Difficulties in decisionmaking (or in emotional balance) often occur due to a perception of reality that is not, in fact, representative of reality.
We spend a great deal of our lives chasing after shadows and tilting at windmills. We fear noises in the night that we would not even take notice of in the plain light of day. Perception must be broadened sufficiently in order to encompass a picture which is truly representative of reality.

Dear Friends:

I am writing this brief note to wish each and all of you a Happy and Healthy Holiday Season. The next post, due to be up on January 5th, 2007, will be of great importance to any of you who have had occasion (or will have occasion) to speak, as leader or facilitator, before a group of persons with conflicting agendas. You will not want to miss this post.

Faithfully,

p.s. Notice the photo above...you will find it slightly unsettling. Which side of the fence will you be on? Is it possible that you are already living your life on one side of this fence.
