DOES THE HUMAN RACE HAVE A DEEPLY-PROGRAMMED SOCIAL DESTRUCTION SWITCH?

-by Douglas Castle,  Featured Author for THE NATIONAL NETWORKER Newsletter: http://www.TheNationalNetworker.com,  http://www.LinkedIn.com/in/douglascastle , http://aboutDouglasCastle.blogspot.com

We Humans kill each other. Cain and Abel. David and Goliath. Hamilton and Burr. Currier and Ives (kidding). We have done it since the beginning of time and we do it today. Whether it is a convenience store robbery gone wrong, an incident on the field of combat, an electrocution or lethal injection, a spate of ethnic cleansing...we can't seem to stop. Nagasaki. Hiroshima. Auschwitz. Jonestown.

Words fail us but weapons don't. Something is not working properly. Enough murder leads to extinction, and we Human Beings are in danger of extinction. We don't need to be hit by a meteor shower.

If some priest, shaman or other bearer of gifts or keeper of secrets doesn't share his knowledge with us, we eventually kill him for "holding out on us." Ironically, if some humanitarian, scientist, philosopher or holy man is compelled by his generous spirit to share his visions or knowledge with us, we will crucify him, burn him at the stake, or ostracize him until his life becomes so unbearable that he willingly surrenders it up to stop the pain.

We do far more killing than creating. Perhaps that's because killing, like destroying, is so much easier. if indeed there is a murderous gene, it is not only dominant, but it is becoming increasingly prevalent as killers tend to breed more than creators. This makes sense, as the percentage of killers grows far more rapidly than the percentage of creators -- and killers have a longer lifespan.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

EMOTION IN BUSINESS - THE DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD

EMOTION IN BUSINESS - THE DOUBLE-EDGED SWORD

This article contains references and hyperlinks to an article which was originally published in THE NATIONAL NETWORKER Newsletter (September, 2009, Week 1) by Featured Columnist Douglas Castle.

Dear Colleagues:

My brief +/- 140-character broadcast on Twitter read as follows:

"Passion fuels a business, but an emotional attachment to a bad decision can undo it all. Douglas Castle http://twitlik.com/Sunk  #TNNW " Please read the article, and give me your candid feedback.

The article is titled "Don't Keep Watering a Dead Tree," and it deals with a problem that I have seen in virtually every professional career and in every business. We have a very Human propensity to start a business out of passion (not unlike adolescent infatuation), and then to mess things up in increments, over time, by making bad decisions and continuing to support them. My favorite example was a software development company client which had spent well over its budget on a particular type of packaged program that was already becoming obsolete in the marketplace. Demand for the product, which was not quite complete, was diminishing daily as the market turned toward a different technology.

Despite this knowledge, the directors of the company, all very good technical programmers, were obsessed with "seeing the project through." [not unlike deciding to go to the beach after it has begun to drizzle because you'd already packed your cooler]

They not only failed to cut their losses, but they continued to overspend their budget and neglect their core business. They were in Chapter 11 six months later. This is extremely common. My questions for the Group are:

1.     How do we increase our own awareness of this tendency?
2.     How do we differentiate between a "loss" and an "opportunity-in-progress?"
3.     Is it helpful to create a rule (i.e., a budget) which absolutely limits time and money on any project, regardless of how "close" we feel that we are getting to victory?
4.     What are some of the excuses that we use to justify throwing good money after bad?
5.     Many people believe that most businesses fail because of inadequate capitalization. Is it possible that an even greater percentage fail because of reluctance to acknowledge mistakes and change course?

I would truly appreciate your insights as well as your review of the article.

Thank you.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

WATCH. PREPARE.CIRCLE THE WAGONS

WATCH. PREPARE. CIRCLE THE WAGONS.

There is an article referenced on Twitter about trends you should watch and prepare for. Go to: http://twitlik.com/TheWave.

The article was simultaneously published onThe Internationalist Page, @ http://theinternationalistpage.blogspot.com ,The Global Futurist , @ http://theglobalfuturist.blogspot.com , and on The National Networker RSS/ DAILY Email feed (at http://TheNationalNetworkerWeblog.blogspot.com) #TNNW_BUZZWORKS.

Observation: All socio-economic phenomena, throughout the course of history, occur in a "wave" or "pendulum" pattern, with the same predictive signs, and same results. It is merely a matter of 1) timing, and 2) the depth and breadth of the socio-economic change. The process is complex, but not chaotic.

To survive the coming storm, it is prudent to become part of a larger, more diverse group of allies, where ideas and abilities complement eachother's, and wherein the synergy of the "mastermind" concept can be brought into effective use. Networking is an obvious beginning, but it must be advanced, rapidly to a state of genuine team-building. In the emerging and transformed world of competitive, struggling free-lance entrepreneurs, belonging to a good business and social organization is an insightful pre-emptive defense.

Thinking and talking about doing this are sensible first steps; but I would caution one and all to accelerate your team-building efforts. Diversify resources, abilities, the aggregate knowledge base, internal fiscal and emotional support systems, and sources of revenue, as well as of other resources.

Unicellular organisms are quite limited in their ability to make adapatations to environmental and circumstantial changes. The megalithic multicellular juggernaughts we refer to as large corporations or as federal or state governments have shown themselves to become wasteful, parasitic and even cancerous if they exceed a certain size or "critical mass".

I feel intuitively that we are at our best when we are in properly-sized, properly-constituted and properly-run groups. Just what is the optimal group size? I do not know.

I will only say this with any degree of certainty: start forming or finding teams. Now. Move. The longer you wait, the less of a chance to join the organization that might be your social and fiscal fortress.

Faithfully,

WORDS

THIS ARTICLE WAS ORIGINALLY PUBLISHED by Douglas Castle in HUMANITAS MAXIMUS (http://HumanitasMaximus.blogspot.com)

Dear Friends:

Words are tools. They can comfort and they can hurt. They can be calm and reassuring -- but they can also be weapons; weapons to cause irreparable hurt to others, and weapons to cause irreparable hurt and regret to yourself. We are judged by our words. Choose them wisely, and choose them well.

Obama says words ill chosen, calls white policeman (AP)
AP - Trying to tamp down a national uproar over race, President Barack Obama acknowledged Friday he had used unfortunate words in declaring that Cambridge, Mass., police "acted stupidly" in arresting black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. "I could've calibrated those words differently," he said.

A good vocabulary, and a good general command of your communications techniques is extremely important. But what is equally, if not more important, is to take the time required to foresee the effects that your words may have upon others, and to use them with great caution and delicacy. Choose your words with your audience's sensitivities in mind. Don't risk being misunderstood. Think first -- then speak.

Respect the power of words.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle

Direct and Collateral Damage: The Tragic Aspects of Self-Defense

Share this ARTICLE with your colleagues on LinkedIn .

Dear Friends:

Following is an open letter to Mr. Stu Sinfa, posted on Facebook just moments ago. Mr. Sinfa asked if it was possible that the State of Israel had been "provoked" to act in a certain way regarding a certain situation. Israel's actions were condemned by some of the British media as being "inappropriate," "needlessly violent," or "uncivilized."
I am not a violent individual, but I believe that if someone points a gun at my head, he or she must be prepared to accept the high likelihood that 1) I will assume that the weapon is loaded; 2) I will assume that the individual aiming at my head intends (at his or her will) to pull the trigger; and that 3) I will take whatever action I am able to take to counter the perceived threat. In sum, I believe that if you choose to threaten my life, you must be fully willing to put your own at peril. You take on an immeasurable risk (and put those close to you at immeasurable potential risk) the moment that you decide to threaten me. There are no exceptions, unless it is my choice to permit you to deliver me from the burdens of this world.

Open Response To Stu Sinfa-

Regarding the issue of Israel's being "provoked" to act, I believe that Israel has been compelled to fight for its survival from the very moment of its first breath as a sovereign state. It is a tiny nation surrounded by violent adversaries relentlessly bent upon its annihilation. Self-defense (like politics) is an imprecise art, often inflicting casualties. -- DC

It is actually very simple, once you strip away the conflicts of interest, posturing, pandering, politics and old-fashioned bigotry.

Faithfully,

Douglas Castle
