When My sister and I were children, one of the first records I can remember her purchasing (with her limited, precious, hard-won allowance) was a vinyl single recording (we used to call them "45s")of Freda Payne singing her Top 40's hit "Band Of Gold."
So melodic. A great song, with simple lyrics and a "rock from side-to-side in your seat" driving beat. Freda had a wonderful, easily articulated voice, filled with energy and conviction. Listen for the sound of the late 60's signature electric sitar. The riff has just a hit of Eastern Europe/ Middle East influence to it... it's created by one special, out-of-place note -- a G# in the Key of G Major. This uniqueness made the riff immortal...even more so as it was repeated between verses as a tempting appetizer. It builds to a great anticipatory climax.
Throughout the song, the backup band plays a counterpunctal (counterpoint) harmony that seems to sing right along with Ms. Payne.
I thank her, my head bowed (not from a New Years hangover), for the glorious memories that this song brings to me, and for the child inside me (and inside each of us) who craves acknowledgement, respect and love.
